Ford Bronco Sport Becomes First Vehicle To Feature Parts Made of 100% Recycled Ocean Plastic

Recycling plastic out of the ocean can be a very time-consuming process, though it is extremely beneficial for the environment. Ford brought back the Bronco recently, and their current model is made using 100 percent recycled plastic for harness clips that are used in the second row. Ford has used recycled plastic before in the form of old water bottles (for their 2020 Ford Escape), but this is the first time that they are utilizing ocean plastic. They have partnered with DSM Engineering to collect this material out of the Indian Ocean, which is often due to commercial fishing equipment and nets being discarded into water. After DSM Engineering removes the plastic, it is prepared for molding.

The Harness clips that are part of the 2021 Ford Bronco and that use recycled ocean plastic are hidden behind the interior panels of the Bronco. They are connected to the wiring system on the side panels that are part of the airbag safety system. Ford was able to construct a part that is very durable, strong, and affordable. It was 10 percent less expensive to use this process of construction. It also benefits the environment, which is priceless.

We're excited to learn more about Ford's plans to increase the use of 100 percent recycled ocean plastic in the construction of other parts on their vehicle.
