An assortment of car sounds can appear anytime you drive. Some noises have a more apparent cause. But other times, noises can emerge that don't have such a clear origin. In this case, you'll want to take a closer look at your vehicle to see if you can determine where the noise is coming from. Some sounds may be accompanied by other symptoms that can provide additional clues about what is wrong.

Squeaky Brakes

Multiple problems can make the brakes squeak. These problems range from temporary ones such as environmental factors to issues with the braking components themselves. If you have recently driven in snow or rain, the brakes can squeak when they get wet. Dirt and dust can also accumulate on the braking components. If the noise persists, consider other issues like worn brake pads or loose parts in the braking system.

Engine Rattling

Rattling coming from the engine often comes from a problem called pre-ignition. This issue can start when the air and fuel combine at the wrong time, which creates extra pressure in the engine cylinder and causes an early ignition. The problem can result from using the wrong kind of fuel or the incorrect fuel grade. Switching fuels might help. If not, there may be a problem with the EGR valve, the knock sensor, or the computer in the engine.

Engine Clicking

Clicking sounds in the engine can be constant or intermittent. They may also have a few different sources. Clicks can due to a bad bearing that causes the rod to go bad. Valves that are not appropriately adjusted can cause clicking, too. Engine oil levels that are below normal can also be a source of clicking.

Knocking Under the Hood

Knocking sounds coming from the hood are likely caused by two problems. The transmission can create a knocking or clunking noise when it starts to fail, which may also be accompanied by engine stalls or gear shifting that is no longer smooth. The sound can also be due to the crankshaft that has been worn out.

Engine Squealing

A few scenarios can cause squealing, including a worn roller bearing on an engine accessory, a worn serpentine belt, or a tensioner that is worn out and can't provide enough pressure.
